ABSTRACT

An experiment was conducted between April and August 2005 in the experimental farm of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike to study the effect of cocoyam/vegetable cowpea intercropping on four varieties of vegetable cowpea (Akidi ani, Akidi enu, IT 81D-1228-14, and IT 86F-2014-l). The results obtained showed that the semi-erect IT8lD-1228-14 gave significantly (P = 5%) higher number of pods per plant, pod weight, seed weight and pod and seed yield under sole cropping and in intercropping with cocoyam. However, intercropping reduced pod yield but increased seed yield in semi-erect JT8ID1228-14. The partial land equivalent ratio values for all the vegetable cowpea varieties were all below one (1) due to competition among the genotypes.
