Effect Of Coca Cola Brands On Copper And Manganese Extraction In Soils Of South Eastern Nigeria

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine the Copper and Manganese status of the soil using coca cola extraction method. The study area compared the normal and diet brands of coca cola as extract ants for Cu and Mn content of the sod. Soil samples were collected at a depth of 0 30cm from 30 locations in Imo, Abia and Akwa (born States and analyzed for Cu and Mn using the coca cola brands as extractants. Results showed that the soils of the study areas arc sandy loani in texture, very acidic in reaction and low in nutrient contents. 'l'he value for extractable Cu ranged from 0.05-5.17 mg/kg with normal coke extractant and 0. 16- 1 .42 mg/kg with diet coke extractant. Extractable Mn ranged from 9.51-236.58 mg/kg with normal coke extractant and 9.57 -149.15mg/kg with diet coke. extractant. Normal coke extracted significantly more Mn than l.)ict coke. 'The two cxtractants were not statistically difterent in the value of Cu extracted.
