ABSTRACT

The study examined the economics of yam production in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State. Farm level data were collected from a multi-staged sample of 80 yam farmers in Umuahia North Local Government Area and used to specifically, analyse the socioeconomic characteristics of yam farmers, the constraints to yam production, evaluate cost and returns, determine factors that affect yam 4 production and make recommendation for policy consideration on the basis of the findings of this work. Descriptive statistics and ordinary least square regression were used to analyse these objectives. The result shows that farm size, capital input and other input cost are the important of yam production. The implication is that increase in any of these or all of the factors increase yam production. The factors had positive signs and were statistically significant. From the result cost and return carried out, it revealed that yam production is still profitable in the study area.
