Abstract

The research is a pilot study 011 the digitization of theses and dissertations as a strategy lo enhance the Institutional Repository of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike library. The major purpose was to ascertain that the digitization of theses and dissertations in MOUAU library would enhance the Institutional Repository of the University Library. The study was guided by two objectives and two research questions. A population of 71 which was totally enumerated was used for the study. Two data collection instruments, an observation checklist and questionnaire were adopted, while data were analyzed using percentage and mean scores. Data analysis revealed that the size of theses and dissertations stood at 1,284 titles, consisting of 913 theses and 371 dissertations. Furthermore, findings revealed that increased access of theses and dissertations, effective preservation of theses and dissertation, increased space conservation and speedy retrieval of theses and dissertations are the major reasons for digitization of theses and dissertations. All of these benefits are indicated/or the enhancement of IR in academic libraries .
