ABSTRACT

Watering birds in poultry pen is a time consuming operation as this has to be continuous. It may also be unnecessarily costly. A semi-automatic poultry drinker was fabricated and tested during the course of this project. A storage tank of l80litres was connected to supply water for ten matured birds. The semi-automatic drinker was fabricated with a float type stopper to stop inflow of water into the drinker of volume 4.50litres. At the end of the first week (7days), it was observed that the drinker was able to adequately supply 20.5 0litres of water to the birds, and at the end of the study period (21 days), it was able to supply 60.2litres of water. The water consumption on daily basis was found to be affected by weather conditions. The storage of the drinker could be sized to be infihl on weekly basis or as decided by the poultry farm manager.
