ABSTRACT

This study examine the determinant of income ad consumption of small households in Ohafia L.G.A Abia State. The specific objective were to; describe the socio-economic characteristic of the small farm households of the respondent; determine the factors that influences the income of small farm households, determine the factors that influences the consumption expenditure of small farm households, make recommendation based on the finding. Multistage random sampling techniques was employed in selecting the 100 respondents used for the study. Data was collected with the aid of well structured questionnaire using descriptive statistical tools such as; mean, majority (62%) were married. In terms of age that the majority (42%) were between 42-50 years which shows that they are still young, active in work, the majority of the household size is 50%. This implies that the farmers has large family has large family size, in terms of educational attainment most of the farmers had one of education or the other. The majority of the farmers had the farming experience of 11-20years with the percentage of 75% farm size majority of the farmers (49%) had a low income. The significant variables were positively significant such as household size, gender, farm income, educational attainment except that of age. The researcher therefore recommends the proper enlightenment of the rural farmers on the determinants of income and consumption expenditure of small farm households. This paper also recommends that the farmers in rural area (Ohafia) should be enlightened on the need for education because education will enlighten them the more on the best ways of farming in other to reduce expenditure and increase their income.
