ABSTRACT

 This study examines the determinants of household food security in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. Using a structured questionnaire. primary data were collected from a sample of sixty four(64) households. Data collected were analyzed using statistical tools such as: frequencies, percentages, Averages and profit regression analyses. Regression model made up of eleven (11) regressors was specified to determine factors that affect food security in the study area. Six (6) of the specified variables were found to have significant effect on food security. The variables were include : income, Age, Education, Assets, Cooperative and Food from own production which were significant at 1%,10%,5°h,10% and 10% respectively. Using a minimum daily calorie intake of 2500 kilocalorie, food insecurity was determined. The result reveals that 43.75 percent of the households in the study area were food secure and 56.25 percent was food insecure. Recommendations include: increase farmers access to productive resources, improved extension services and encouraging farmers to join cooperative societies.
