ABSTRACT

The ability to maximally harness the potential of any soil begins with a proper evaluation and correct classification of that soil. Soils have a variety of uses which include (but not limited to) road and building construction, sport facilities and agriculture. A few soils may be suitable for a variety of uses, while most may support only a definite type of activity. Moreover, a soil may be suitable for one crop and not another. The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike is blessed with more than 32 hectares of land which have been earmarked for crop production. It is laudable that this research project has begun the process of mapping these soils in order to classify them and evaluate their suitability for agricultural use. It is hoped that further, research will build on this noble effort until the entire land area of the University and its environs have been mapped on an intensive scale. This is required if the University is to play its role in enhancing food production in South Eastern Nigeria, and indeed, the entire country.
