ABSTRACT

Over the years, the electricity power challenges in Nigeria as it relates to generating electricity power through hydro and thermal has continued to witness a downward decline. The demand far outweighs the supply, where it is available it rarely last 4 hours average usage time. This epileptic situation have give rise to the use of alternate sources of power generation during the short or long period power outage is experienced. It is this gap, period ofno supply from the grid that this project will solve by way of designing and constructing an alternate source using solar power for household use. The design and construction ofthe unit a solar powered 1.5KVA inverter was achieved by using a 21/400 turns wound transformer, solar panel, a 100AH deep cycle battery, and a charge controller to monitor the output ofthe battery for safety. The battery is connected to the inverter circuit to generate 220V alternating current in its output via the main I Modulator (PMW) Voltage regulator controller. The designed oscillation period is set at 50% duty cycle or 0.02 seconds to match the frequency of loads connected to it. From table ofresults: the inverter was able to maintain stability for an hour when a refrigerator and other loads up to a 1000W were connected to it. But at peak sunshine and the solar panel tilted 0° relative to the roof inclination, the inverter output for the same load lasted longer hours.
