Abstract

 The idea ofaliteracy, its causes, and its effects on society 'willform the fulcrum ofdiscussion. The paperstarts by looking at what constitutes aliteracy, defines literacy and illiteracy, differentiates aliteracy from literacy and illiteracy thenfocuses on causes ofaliteracy, how it can be combatedwhile suggesting collaborative efforts that can be employed by libraries and librarians, information service providers, and educational institutions in order to mitigate aliteracy. The paper concluded that aliteracy epidemic can be combated successfully with the collaboration ofall stakeholders ifa culture that values reading and information consumption is advanced.
