Cost Implication Of Electrical Power Outages In Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudlke

ABSTRACT

 This project examines the cost of electrical outages in Michael Okpara University, of Agriculture Umudike, Ahia State. The university is one of the largest institutions of higher learning in the south eastern part of Nigeria. The institution was divided into two coverage areas and the various loads in these areas were calculated. The various methods of costing electrical power outages were discussed. A critical look was taken at the causes of electrical power outages ® t and remedies to these causes were also suggested. Furthermore pricing policy was devised for generating sets used in the two coverage areas of the institution that were studied based on their installed capacity. This accounts for the fixed cost of generating sets and its associated distribution units and operational and maintenance cost. A factor of subsidy on the part of the institution is also incorporated into the pricing policy. The electrical power consumption cost of the institution was analyzed, using both PHCN plc. Standard tariff as it affects the institution and the devised pricing policy of the institution generating sets. A comparison of the two costs was also done; it shows that electrical power from PHCN pie is cheaper. Although with the institutions standby generating sets, the problem of power outages disappear if PHCN pie supply is not available. However this is done at an extra cost to the institution.
