Contribution of Nigerian Libraries in the Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge

ABSTRACT

To serve as reservoirs of knowledge, Nigerian libraries need to harness, process, preserve and make accessible indigenous knowledge which traps much information that can bring progress to the society. The paper, therefore, through extensive review of literature, highlights the need for indigenous knowledge. It examines the contributions of libraries towards the promotion of indigenous knowledge in Nigeria. It also emphasizes the need far libraries to evolve measures that will facilitate promotion of indigenous knowledge such as the adoption of hybrid library arrangement and information re-packaging. Challenges facing Nigerian libraries in promoting indigenous knowledge are discussed. The paper made some recommendations for Nigerian libraries to adopt in the promotion of indigenous knowledge. The ..recommendations include, among others, that libraries especially the public, academic, and national should up-grade their ICT facilities, audio-visual resources, and other indigenous knowledge management equipment and tools to facilitate recording, storage use of indigenous knowledge.
