ABSTRACT

 The purpose of this study was to compare the academic performance of Private and Public secondary schools students in Agricultural Science in WAEC and NECO examinations from 2010-2014 in Umuahia North L.G.A of Abia State. To achieve the purpose ofthis study, two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to direct the study. Correlational research design was adopted for the study. Purposive and proportionate stratified random sampling used to select four Private and three Public schools. The instrument used for data collection was proforma (scheduled) used to copy out the Agricultural Science grades ofthe students who sat for WAEC and NECO examinations from 2010-2014. The data collected were analyzed using percentage and chi square statistics. The findings of this study showed that there is a significant difference between Public and Private Secondary School grades in WASSCE Agricultural Science. The difference is in favour of Pubic schools. It also revealed that there is no significant difference in performance of Public school and Private schools in NECO SSCE Agricultural Science Grades. Based on the findings, recommendations were made; that Educational authorities should have effective monitoring ofschools to ensure that the practical aspect of Agriculture is emphasized by the both class ofschools. It is apparent that emphasis is laid on just passing the subject.
