Challenges And Merits Of On-Line Examinations In Open Universities In Nigeria:- Ursula, U. Akanwa

Abstract T he study is on the challenges and merits of use of on-line examinations in Nigerian Open Universities with particular reference to Abia state and Imo state study centres. Survey design was used. The population was second year Faculty of Law and Education students in Imo state and Abia state study centres. Stratified random sampling was used for sample selection. Data was collected with a researcher designed questionnaire.Eight research questions and one hypothesis which guided the study were respective analyzed with percentages and Chi-Square. Some challenges of e-examination discovered are: - Students' ineptitude in the use of computer, faulty computer system and fluctuation in electricity supply. Among the merits are: Objectivity in marking and early release of results. The null hypothesis was rejected. The number of students who opined that e-exams should be retained and their challenges minimized were greater than the number of students who stated that e-exams should be stopped. Some recommendations are: Facilitators should teach students skills required for use of JCT in examination thoroughly before they are subjected to on-line examination, Centre managers should keep computer technicians on stand-by during e-examinations to ensure speedy rectification of faults if the need arises. School authorities should ensure that gadgets which enhance network service are mounted in buildings used for e-examinations and e-/earning to increase examinees and /earners opportunity to use the computer.
