ABSTRACT

Cataloguing and classification standards are viewed in two dimensions: Standards of procedure and standards of functions. The CUNLU guidelines for cataloguing in Nigerian academic libraries are used as a standard for assessment. Findings revealed that standard procedures for cataloguing and classification are fully met and complied with in MOUAU library. However, in respect of the basic standard function of library cataloguing, which is to facilitate access to the holdings, the MOUAU library is found largely wanting, owing to the absence of a functional catalogue. Several constraints arc identified which include non-production of catalogue cards, resulting in high incidence of backlog of un-typed and un-filed cards, lack of power supply and resources for cataloguing and card production ,inadequate staff and high turnover of cataloguing staff. The paper proffers strategies such as outsourcing; capacity building and automation of cataloguing operations as strategies to enable the library attain the standard of a functional catalogue.
