Automation in Contemporary Libraries:- Agbo Amaoge D

Abstract This chapter discusses automation in contemporary libraries. It explores the conceptual definitions of automation vis-a-vis library automation, potential benefits ofautomation in libraries. It also identifies areas that can be automated in libraries, facilities and equipment for effective automation, skills needed by librarians'for effective library automation, challengesfacing library automation andstrategiesfor effective library automation. The study noted that libraries could adopt automatedsystems to track and manage the circulation ofphysical materials, such as books, CDs, and DVDs, as well as digital resources, such as ebooks and online databases. These systems also allow libraries to quickly and effectively track and manage the availability of materials, streamline the process of borrowing and returning materials, and provide patrons with self-service options, such as the ability to place on hold or renew items online. Despite these potential benefits oflibrary automation, they are also facedwith a number ofchallenges which when studied and tackled with ideal strategies will help libraries to operate more efficiently and effectively, providing patrons with greater access to a wide range ofresources and services.
