Assessment Of Nutritional Status Of Preschool Children In Alike Obowo L. G. A In Imo State

ABSTRACT

The nutritional status of pre-school children (aged 2-5 years) in Alike, Obowo L.G.A of Imo state was investigated. Nutritional status was assessed using anthropometric measurements of height, weight, chest circumference, head circumference and was compared with WHO; (2005) standards. Dietary assessments were based on estimated weighed food intake and were compared with FAQ (1994) standards. Validated questionnaire were also used to collect data on their social economic status obtained from the mothers. Using the height-for-age as an indicator of nutritional status, 8.7% were severely stunted and 24% were stunted; Based on weight-for-age, 4% were underweight, 19.3% were normal and 4% were overweight. However, using the weight-for-age indicator , 0.7% were wasted, 76% were normal, 16% were overweight and 6.75 were obese. The mean energy intake of the children was 1275.l9kcal and was below FAQ (1994) recommendation. There is therefore need for nutrition education in order to  educate the mothers on ways to improve the nutrient intake of the children
