Assessment Of Competencies Required And Possessed By Basic Science And Technology (Bs And T) Teachers Towards Ensuring Teacher Quality Assurance :- U.N.Akanwa

Abstract The study sought to determine the competencies required and possessed by Basic Science and Technology (B S &T) teachers towards ensuring teacher quality assurance in science teaching. The area of the study is Abia State and a descriptive survey design was used. The population for the study consisted all the 460 Basic science and Technology teachers in secondary schools in Abia State. Using a simple random sampling technique, 340 teachers of Basic science and technology teachers were sampled. The instrument used for data collection was a S-cluster instrument developed by the researchers. The instrument has a reliability coefficient of 0.89. The instrument was administered on a sample of 340 BS & T teachers in secondary schools in Abia State. Data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test statistics. The findings of the study include: that the Basic Science and Technology teachers require many competencies in teaching the subject, they do not possess majority of the competencies for teaching Basic Science. Based on this, it was recommended among other things that competencies for teaching Basic Science and Technology be included in teacher education curriculum to enhance quality assurance.
