Abstract

This study appraised progress and challenges to effective teaching and learning in university education in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria. The researchers recognized the fact that there is a decline in the quality of university graduates; and sought to find out possible factors to the observed phenomenon. The survey research design was adopted, and a sample size of 372 respondents from six universities (3 federal and 3 states) who were academic staff was randomly selected for the study. The results of data analysis using independent t-test statistical analysis technique at 95% confidence interval revealed that male and female lecturers do not differ in their opinion that there is inadequate and ineffective teaching and learning supports initiatives in our universities. The results further revealed that the inadequate and ineffective teaching and learning supports initiatives does differ in terms of school ownership (Federal and State). It is recommended that tertiary education in Nigeria be adequately funded, and that managers of institutions of higher learning should devise mechanisms to ensure proper utilizations of such funds for the provision of pedagogical supports for teachers and students. ICT trainings for both staff and students are a dare necessity in our tertiary institutions.
