Antioxidants And Hypoglycemic Potentials Of Ethanol Leaf Extract Of Senna Hirsuta L.:- Wogu, Glory C

ABSTRACT

 Medicinalplants containing high antioxidant properties play an important role in the prevention ofvarious degenerative diseases in the society. Senna hirsuta L. has been of keen interest in phytochemical and pharmacological research due to their excellent traditional values. The present study is aimed at investigating their antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities or properties. The antioxidant activity of S. hirsuta ethanol leaf extract -was accessed by in vitro experimental parameters such as DPPH (1, l-Diphery-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity and nitric oxide radical assay. The DPPH was found to be concentration-dependent manner. The result showed that S. hirsuta ethanol leaf extract displayed potent-in vitro antioxidant activity that, may be attributed to the phenolic compounds present. Also the result of the in vivo hypoglycemic activity ofethanol leafextract ofS. hirsuta L. in alloxan induced diabetic rats at different concentration of 500, 250,125 and 62.5 mg/ml respectively indicated that this plant leaf extract posses hypoglycemic properties. Thus, this study strongly recommends the use of S. hirsuta ethanol leafextract as antidiabetic agent.
