Accounting Ethics And Global Economic Meltdown: The Nigerian Experience (A Study Of Selected Banks)

ABSRACT

This research work was borne out of the quest to measure the impact of failure of accounting ethics on the global economic meltdown so as to prove the relevance of standards in accounting ethics to students, lecturers, investors, creditors, banks, government and other private and public companies who in one way or the other make use of financial statement. The main objective of this study is to establish whether there exist any significant difference between failure of accounting ethics and the global economic meltdown so as to proffer possible recommendations that will lead to high moral standard in the accounting profession. To achieve this main objective, primary data was collected from appropriate sources using questiolmaire. With the application of chi-square as a tool for statistical analysis, the data collected were properly analyzed and it was consequently found that failure of accounting ethics actually contributed to the global economic meltdown and therefore can affect any company no matter how strong and wealthy that company may seem to be. Based on these findings, it was recommended that codes of ethical standards should be maintained in all professions, accounting, auditing, business etc. soas to maximize productivity, stability and sustainability of such company.
