ABSTRACT

The overall objective of this research work is to evaluate accounting as a tool for the management and development of small scale business enterprises, and the extent to which proper accounting records improve the growth and management of corporate entities. The work was based on a case study of selected small scale business enterprises in Aba, Abia State. In the course of this research work, responses to the questions in the questionnaire were analyzed and interpreted. Also a test of hypothesis is carried out. The result of the research support the assertion that small scale businesses that maintain proper accounting records do not experience problems in their growth. It was discovered that improper accounting records resulting from insufficient funds to maintain functional accounting department is the major factor responsible for poor management, low productivity and limited growth in these organizations. Consequent upon the findings, the researcher strongly recommends that; Small scale business enterprises should increase their capital base. They should employ the right caliber of management staff in their organizations like qualified accountants to handle their books and financial records. They should main proper budgetary system. They should carryout stock taking often and keep them in records so as to know when there is loss of stock, They should maintain proper records of their financial transaction.
