ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY ISSUES IN ABIA STATE PUBLIC SECTOR (A STUDY OF ABIA STATE UNIVERSITY, UTURU)

ABSTRACT

This  research   work  focused   on  the  Accountability    and  Transparency    Issues  - in Nigeria  public  sector  a  study  of Abia  State  University    Uturu.   The  main  purpose was to discover  areas  of  similarities,   differences  and  hindrance   and  then  suggest possible    ways  of enhancing   the present  standards  and  performance.   In this study, the  researcher   used  both  primary   and  secondary   sources  of  information   and  the statistical   techniques   used   in  analyzing    the  result1     of  the  information    arc  the percentages  and analysis   of variance.   (A.NOVA). The findings  from research  are as follows:   That  poor  accountability    and  transparency   in  public   sector  is  caused  by non-challent       activities      of    government     agencies.      That     irregular      financial examination    of account   do  affect  the  accountability    and  transparency.     That  poor internal  control  in Nigeria  public  sector do hinder  accountability   and transparency. Based  on these  findings,  the  researcher    recommended     that  the  anti-government agencies    should   as a matter   of urgency  intensified  their    efforts    in bringing     to book the  offenders   of accountability   and   transparency     in  the  execution    of their duties.  The  government   on  their  parts  should   provide    the  enabling  environment, regufar   salary   payments,   bonus   and  other  incentives   to  civil   servants.    Finally, stiffer   punishment ﾿ should    be   made   on   the ﾿ offender ﾿ of ﾿ accountability ﾿ and transparency  to serve ﾿ as a deterrant  to others. ﾿
