ABSTRACT
This
work involved the investigation of the effect of substrates and substrate
supplementation (Andropogen gayanus straw) and (Anthonotha macrophylla bark) on
the yield and myco-chemical composition of Pleurotus ostreatus var florida. The
highest gross yield fruit bodies was obtained from substrate E(66.00), followed
by substrates D (58.60° ), while the least was found in substrates B (36.00°
).Similarly the fruit-bodies of substrates E weighed more than those from other
substrates for both fresh and dry weight. Pileus diameter and stipe length of
the fruit bodies from the substrates and substrates supplementation followed
the same trend as in the number of fruit- bodies. Based on the mycochemicals
composition, the highest Alkaloid content (6.30° ±0.0 I) was found in substrate
C, while substrates E has the least (4.00' ±0.04). The highest Tannin content
was obtained from substrates D (1.95±0.01) while substrate E (1.58'±0.01) has
the least. However, flavonoid content of the fruits bodies followed the same
trend as in tannin having the highest flavonoid content (2.97° ±0.03) for
substrates D and the least (1.47±0.06) was found in substrates E. the highest
HCN content was obtained from substrates D(0.020±0.01) while the least was
obtained from substrates A (0.017±0.00). Substrates C has the highest
Anthocyanin content of (4.93° ±0.02) while substrates E has the least
(1.07±0.01).The appreciable levels of the mycochemicals obtained from the mushrooms
as affected by the substrates and substrates supplementations indicates their
medicinal value and property which support the safety of mushroom for
consumption. The result of the investigations was discussed in line of the best
substrates for the maximum production of Pleurotus ostreatus fruit- bodies with
better qualities. The investigation concluded that growing Pleurotus ostreatus
on 50:50 Andropogon gayanus (Kunth) straw and Anthonotha macrophylla (P.Beauv)
bark produced the highest fruit-bodies among the whole substrates which make
the mushroom more healthy for consumption purpose and wide production of
mushroom for market values.
