’Thioacetamide induced toxicity and hepatoprotective effect of Hibiscus Sabdariffa hydroacohol extract on albino wistar rat:- Kanu Ezinne E.
ABSTRACT
The
work is aimed at investigating thioaceamide induced toxicity and
hepatoprotective effect of Hibiscus Sabdariffa hydroalcohol extract on wistar
albino rats. Twenty rats were randomly grouped into five with four rats per
group. Group 1 which is the positive control and other groups was given
commercial rat fed and water. Thioacetamide was orally induced to group 2 which
is the negative control. The animals in group’ 3 to 5 received oral
administration of the extract at different doses. Group 3 received extract
200mg/kg, group 4 received 400mg/kg and group 5 received 600mg/kg. The result
revealed a significant increase in aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine
aminotransferase (ALT), and bilirubin (BIL), and a significant decrease in
alkaline phoshpatase (ALP) and total protein (TP) level of the rats group with
thiopacetamide. The results also indicated that Hibiscus Sabdariffa plant
extract has varying effect on the liver function indices but also reduces
toxicity. Thus it can be said that Hibiscus Sabdariffa has a proective effect
on the liver.
