The Toxicological Indicies And The Histopathological Examination Of The Liver In Albino Rats Fed With Mucuna Pruriens Oil
ABSTRACT
The study examines the toxicological indices and histopatlilogical examination of
the liver in albino rats fed with mucuna pruriens based diet compared with that of
palm oil supplemented diets for 28 days. The physiochemical indices of the oil
revealed the following parameters: Acid value 0.80mgKQH/g, Peroxide value
0.00mEqKIg, Saponofication value 86.05, Unsaponification matter 46.l0%, free
fatty acid value 0.40, Viscosity 37.54 and Iodine value 24.40/lOOg fat. The
antioxidants levels of the experimental group (13-carotene, 0.65mg/mi, Vitamin C,
1.77mg/mi and Vitamin E, 0.11mg/mi) compared to that of the control group (f3-
carotene, 0.64, Vitamin C, 1.60 and Vitamin E, 0.09).but the values of Zinc and
Selenium were reduced in the experimental group (Zinc, 13.71mg/mi and
selenium, 0.11mg/mi respectively) compared to the control (Zinc, 14.87mg/mi and
Selenium, 0.l2mg/ml respectively). The histological examination revealed mild
edema, vacuolation and strornal proliferation experimental organ when compared
with the control suggesting that mucuna oil is not a liver friendly oil and its use is
not advisable although it contains antioxidant.
