The Role Of Statutory Auditors In Preventing And Detecting Fraud In Government Establishment In Nigeria (A Study Of Aba South Local Government)
ABSTRACT
The study examined the role of statutory auditors in preventing and detecting frauds in government establishment in Nigeria. A statistical formula derived by Taro Yamane was employed. Sequel to the study, survey design was adopted and primary data was used. Structured questionnaire was designed to facilitate the acquisition of relevant data which was used for the analysis. The population of the study consists of 863 staff of Aba South Local Government Area which comprises of all the staff level subject to systematic random sampling. The findings of the study reveals that there is significant relationship between statutory auditors role and the prevention of fraud in government establishment and there is significant effect between statutory auditors role and detection of fraud in government establishment in Nigeria. It was tested using simple regression (SPSS 23) at 5% level of significance. The study concludes that auditors can review and comment on organizational goals and objectives to reduce the existence of unrealistic performance measures, therefore recommends that statutory auditors must put into consideration detection of material misstatement while carrying out audit in the financial statement of any government establishment
