ABSTRACT

This project is on THE ROLE OF MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING IN THE

BANKING INDUSTRY. The main objective of the study is to find out the role

of management accounting in the management of banking industry.

The researcher undertook a study of selected banks in Urnuahia since it was not

possiblto study all the banks. For primary data, structured questionnaires

were administered on staff of the banks selected. Related literatures were

reviewed for the secondary data which formed the base of the research. To

analyze the data obtained, tables were used with percentages to show the degree

of the responses. The Chi-square statistic was used to test the hypothesis

formulated.

The major findings of this research are:

- That management accounting techniques were applied in the banks

- That budgeting is the mostly applied management accounting techniques

- Management accounting information are provided in good time and are

adequate

- The advise of management accountants are sought in the granting of

credit to customers

- Budgetary cycle of the banks allows for effective planning

- Management accounting contributions are relevant in the success of

banks

Th major recommendations made based on the findings are

- Banks should continuously use the services of management accounting

professionals

- Professionally qualified persons should engaged to perform the functions

of management accounting

- There should be training and retraining of management accountants to

keep them abreast of the latest development in the profession.
