ABSTRACT
The
prevalence of Salmonella typhi among nursery and primary school children of
Ugwuntu community primary school Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State
was evaluated. One hundred blood specimen were used for preliminary widal
agglutination reaction test of which twenty seven (27) were reactive to
Salmonella antigen. Twenty of the subject samples were from female pupils while
seven were from male pupils. When their stool were cultural on Salmonella
Shigella agar (SSA), those twenty seven samples yielded growth of Salmonella
spp after 24hrs of incubation period at 37°C. from the study of the laboratory
findings, a nonsignificant growth was obtained from the total number ofblood
samples or total subjects initially recruited (100) for this project work. The
prevalence of Salmonella typhi among nursery and primary school children of
Ugwutu Community Primary School in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia was
found to be 27 (27%) of the blood samples of asymptomatic subjects investigated
and this is not obviously significant. The prevalence was high between ages 3
to 10 and peaks at age 5 to 6 but lower between 11 and 14 years. Pupils in
their later age (midteens) have lower prevalence. The latter observation was
due to the impact of health education in their lives and their compliance to
sanitary measures put in place by the school
