ABSTRACT
The aim ofthis study is to assess the Extended
Spectrum Beta Lactamase profile of Escherichia coli from soil of different
poultry farms. Ten (10) samples each were collected from three . different
poultry farms in Umuahia, Abia State and the samples were collected aseptically
into a sterile plastic bag and labeled accordingly. They were transported
immediately to the laboratory for microbiological analysis. A ten fold serial
dilution of each ofthe fecal samples was prepared using sterile distilled
water. 0.1 mL aliquots of the serially-diluted samples (10'2and 10’4) was
spread-plated on the medium. The sensitivity pattern of the isolate revealed
that Ceftazidime (60%), was more sensitive to the isolate followed by,
Ceftizoxime (56%), and Cefotaxime (56%) while Amoxicillin (60%) was resistance
to the isolate followed by Ofloxacin (56%),, Ampicillin (56%), Gentamicin
(53.3%) while Chloramphenicol (50%) was less resistance to the isolate. The Extended
Spectrum P-lactamase profile of E.coli from different poultry farms. The
results showed that Umuahia had more prevalence of ESBL producing E.coli (83%)
when compared with Mouau (75%) and Umuariaga (JI Escherichia coli is the most
prevalent genus of ESBL resistant enterobacteria colonizing poultry animals
within the study area. The study shows that chicken reared in the study area
are potential reservoirs and disseminators of ESBL-resistant enterobacteria and
genes encoding for ESBLs production thus, the study recommended that ESBL
producing organisms should be identified quickly so that appropriate antibiotic
usage and infection control measures can be implemented.
