ABSTRACT

The study focused  on the influence  of oil and gas accounting  on the economy of  Nigeria.  The  oil   industry    has  undoubtedly   brought   economic   benefits   to many  people  but  it has  left its trial  a complex  mix of environmental    pollution problems  such as pesticide  contamination,  increased  incidences  of cancers  from carcinogens,   lock   of  access   to  clean  water,   toxic   waste   and  unsustainable extraction   of  resources   and  the  most  riotable   of  which   is   oil   pollution   and physical  destruction   of  landscape.   The  study  made  use  of  a  survey  research design where data were collected  through questionnaires    and analyzed   using the chi-square   (X2)    statistical   tool.  The study  revealed  that oil and gas accounting actually  influence  the economy  of Nigeria.  The study concluded  that significant influence  exists  between   oil  and  gas  accounting   and  employment   generation, infrastructural   development,   foreign   direct  investment   and  foreign   exchange earnings.  Oil  and  gas  is  therefore   a  real  source  of  capital  formation   for  the economic  take off  of a country  that  puts its oil resources  to  a good  use.   It is recommended   that there  should  be increase  in social responsibility   activities  of oil  companies   as  well  as  increase   in  government   spending   on  development programmes   in Niger  Delta.  Additionally?    In order  to reduce  the  incidence    of sabotage  of pipelines  as a result  of bunkering,   youths  in the Niger  Delta should be given employment    by oil companies  operating  in that region.
