ABSTRACT
A study was carried
out to determine the efficacy of leaf, stern and root powder of a medicinal
plant Lapovtea aesteus as a nematicide against root knot nernatodes Meioidogyne
s1bp) in eggplant in a pot experiment. The experiment was laid out in a
completely randornised design (CRD) with five treatments replicated three
tithes. The treatments includes leaf, stern, root powder of Lapovtea aesteus,
synthetic nernaticide (furadan) and non treated plant as control. Results
obtained shows non significant differences between inoculated plant that were
treated with the powders of Lcipovtea aesteus and furadan. There were also non
significant differences between growth and yield parameters measured. On the
number of root knot galls, the control plants recorded the highest number of
galls (800) and was significantly different from the other treatments. Plant
treated with the powders of Lapovtea aesteus effectively reduced the number. of
galls and the results did not differ, significantly fron th furadan treated
plants. Results also indicated significant reduction of nernatode pdpulation in
the soil by the treatments. Control has the highest (800) followed by root
powder (600). And the least came from furadan (200) Similar results were
obtained with nernatode population in plant roots. Again control had the
highest (750) followed by stern and root powder (500) respectively. Results of
leaf powder and furadan (250) did not differ significantly. Generally, powder
extracts of Lapovtea aestuans compared favourably with ftiradan
