The Effects Of Aqueous And Alcoholic Extracts Of Euphorbia Heterophylla (Spurge Weed) On Liver Function Of Guinea Pig Models
ABSTRACT
The extract of E. heterophylla was
analysed and its phytochemical composition are; alkaloid (0.853±0.042),
flavonoid(5 .366±0.3 87),tannin (0.28±0.000), saponin(0.48±0.03 1
),phenol(0.547±0.006) and cyanogenic glycoside(9. I 87±0.029)Ethanolic and
aqueous extract of E. heterophylla were administered to three groups of
apparently healthy guinea pigs at doses of 100,200,and 300mg/kg body weight for
five days. Blood samples (serum) were collected on daily basis and analyzed for
liver function enzymes(ALP,ALT,AST), total protein ,cholesterol and compared
with the controls.Results showed that the extract caused increase in ALP(32
IU/L-46 IU/L),ALT(28 IU/L-711U/L), AST(25 IU/L-5 hUlL) and decreased in
cholesterol( 186 IU/L- 182 lUlL), while total protein was not affected. Again
ethanol extract is found to have more effect on the animal than the water
extract. Further observation showed that the effect of the extract on the
animal was at its peak within the first 48hrs after which it wore down and
stabilizes at almost normal range. It was concluded that the extract effect was
due to its phytochemical composition. The plant extract did not demonstrate
strong toxicity on the animals, and therefore was considered safe enough
especially against the background that the animal physiology appeared to have
tolerated the extract very well and adjusted after 48-72hrs. Further research
on the plant was recommended.
