ABSTRACT
Effect of nitrogen on growth and yield of three genotypes of vegetable cowpea (Vigna unguiculata subspecies unguicu!aia) was studied in 2004 at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in the rain forest zone of south eastern Nigeria. The treatments comprised three vegetable cowpea genotypes (IT8ID — 1228 — 14, 1T86F — 2014-1 and IT86F — 2062-5) and 4 rates of nitrogen fertilizer (OkgN/ha, 25kgN/ha, 50kgN/ha, and 75kgN/ha) in a 3 x 4 factorial laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Results showed that genotypes differed significantly (P<0.01) from each other for most of the traits studied with the excer4on of pod yield per hectare (t/ha) and harvest index. Nitrogen fertilizer application and interaction between genotype and nitrogen fertilizer were not significant (p>O.05).
