The Effect Of Methanolic Extract Of Bridelia Miranth4 On The Liver And Kidney Enzymes Of Alloxan Induced Diabetic Albino Rats.
ABSTRACT
The effect of Bridelia micratha on the liver and kidney function tests of alloxan-induced diabetic rats was evaluated in this study. Diabetes was induced in male albino wistar rats by a single ntraperitoneal injection of alloxan monolydrate at the dose of 160mg/kg body weight. Three doses of the extract (125, 250 and 500mg/kg) were used for the study while 2mg/kg of glihenclamnide was used as a positive control. Both the extract and drug were administered to the rats for 10 days orally by astric gavage. At the end of the 10 days blood was collected from the rats from the media canthas to obtain serum for biochemical analysis such as liver function tests (Alanine aminotra.nsferase (AST) aspertate amniniotrasperase (ALT) Alkaline phosphatase (A L1). total protein. hiliruhin and globulin and kidney function tests such as serum, urea and creatinine. Bridelia micrantha extract caused a dose dependent and significant (P<0.05) reduction of the AST and ALP and total hilirubin. The extract also caused various levels of reduction of ALT. total globulin while total protein was increased only at the dose of 125mg/kg of BME. Also the extract caused reduction of serum urea but increased the levels of creatinine. In conclusion, the findings suggest that methanolic leaf extract of B. micrantha have positive effect on liver and kidney function tests of alloxan-induced diabetic rats.
