ABSTRACT
The acute, toxicity, phytochemical and effect
methanol extract of Citrullus lanatus on PSA level and serum electrolyte were
investigated using standard methods. The result of the phytochemical analysis
of Citrullus lanatus showed high levels of flavonoid, saponin and reducing
sugar. The LDso was gotten at 500mg/kgbwt. The relative heart, kidney, lungs
weight showed no p>0.05 significant difference. There was significant
p<0.05 in relative prostate weight of disease control group when compared
with other treated group when compared with other treated group while the
relative testes significantly (p<0.05) decreased in disease control when
compared with the normal and other treatment groups. The result of PSA level
showed significant (p<0.05) increase in disease control when compared with
other treatment groups. The serum electrolyte result showed that the level of
sodium increased (p<0.05) significantly in disease relative to the normal
control and groups treated with crude extract of a Citrullus lanatus. There was
no (p>0.05) significant difference in chloride concentration between the
treatment groups. The result also showed significant (p<0.05) decrease in
potassium in disease and disease control when compared with group treated with
400mg/kg but the level of Bicarbonate also decreased (p<0.05) significantly
in disease control when compared with 200mg/kgbwt. The result show that
Citrullus lanatus contain phytochemical that have the ability to reduce PSA and
prostate weight relief of symptom of BPH, Thus The pharmacological efficacy
ofthe extracts is believed to be due to synergistic effect of several compounds
such as Flavonoids, Saponin, Oxalate.
