ABSTRACT
This study investigated the protective effect of oral administration of the different doses (50mg and 100mg) of methanol extract of Dial him guineen''e leaves against liver cell damaoc on alloxan-induced diabetic female rats. Analyses of the following parameters were madc: alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (ASl). total cholesterol (I 1. I IOL). ioiai protein (T.PROT), globulin, albumin (ALB). total and direct bilirubin and lastinu blood suar (FBS) .Twenty-five (25) albino rats were distributed into live (5) groups. (Iroup I (onhial control) was not administered alloxan, but only received normal feed and . Group 2 (negative control) received 120mg/kg body weight of alloxan but was left untreated. Groups 3 was administered alloxan and were treated using standard anti-diabetic drug (glibenclamide).Group 4 was administered alloxan and were treated using 50mg/kg body weight of Dial/urn guineense leaves extract and Group 5 was administered alloxan and were treated using 100mg/kg body weight of Dial/urn guineense leaves extract. ['he results indicate that the 50mg and 100mg of the extract caused elevation in total cholesterol non-significantly at (P>0.05) when compared with the negative control and positive control whereas the 50mg and 100mg standard drug on total cholesterol increased significantly (p00.05) v hen compared with negative control. but a non-significant (p>O.OS) increase in comparison ith the positive control. The effect of 50mg extract on ALT and AST had a non-significant elevation (p>O.05) when compared with the negative control and positive control. A significant difference on ALT and AS! was observed in 100mg of the extract fed rats at (p<O.05) in comparison with the negative control hut increased non-significantly\ in comparison with positive control. There was a significant decrease in the FBS (p<O.OS) when compared with negative control and other parameters. No significant difference as observed in albumin, globulin and total protein levels at (p<O.OS) in the 50 and 100mg contract hen compared between the negative control and other parameters. Final I) . there \ as a significant increase in direct bilirubin (p<O.05) when compared between the negative control and other parameters in the 50mg and 100mg extract and also a significance difference in the total bilirubin when compared with positive and negative control. '1'herefore. methanol extract of' Dialiuiii guineense leaves did not exert a hepatoprotective effect in the rats used, and caused the unusual effect of causing cholesterol elevations but exerted a hypoglycemic elect in the rat used.
