ABSTRACT

 This study investigated the effect ofjob training on library staffofMichael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike Library. Four research objectives were formulated to guide the study as well as four (4) research questions. The researcher reviewed extensive literatui e in the course of this studyfrom different subject areas on the effect ofstafftraining. A descriptive survey i eseai ch design was adopted by the researcher. The area ofstudy was Abia State. The population ofthe study was 72 library staffwhich comprised ofthe professionals, para-professionals and support staff, the researcher studied the entire population. A questionnaire was used as the toolfor data collection. The questionnaire was titled Questionnaire on the Effect ofJob Training on Library Stajf in Academic Libraries (QEJTLSAL). Mean scores and frequency counts was used as the method of data analysis with appropriate graphic illustrations to present data for the questionnaire. A total ofseventy-two (72) copies questionnaire were distributed to staffofMichael Okpara University ofAgriculture Umudike (MOUAU) libraryfor the study, sixty-three (63) copies ofthe questionnaires were returned which were dulyfilled and considered usable for the analysis. Major findings of this study showed that in-service, workshop, seminar, institutional training programmes, industrial attachments, on-the-job training were some ofthe training programmes obtainable in MOUAU Library, but in-service training was the most frequent among them all according to the respondents. In the same vein, it was deduced that the result ofthe trainings was seen in their quality of work, new skill, efficient services etc. The study identified financial, technical and managerial issues as some of the challenges and provision of adequate fund, periodical training programmes like in-house training, workshops, conferences as some ofthe solutions. In conclusion, there are various trainings available, but not without some challenges. The researcher recommends that training opportunities should be given to staff only reputable institutions should be recommended to train staff, management should make training ofstaff a priority. This study has contributed to the existing literature on the effect ofjob training on library staff
