ABSTRACT

Mushroom has been reported to possess some nutritional benefits and substrates for its growth has always been a factor of consideration in its production. This work evaluates the hormonal (follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone) effect of Pluroteus ostreatus grown on varying concentrations of' HG!- soaked palm oil bunch (POB) in wistar albino rats. A total of 24 male wistar rats were used for this study. They were acclimatized for a period of I week and fed Vital feed and water ad libitum. The animals were grouped into six (n=4). Group 1 served as the control and was fed 400 mg/kg aqueous extract of' mushroom grown on palm oil bunch while groups 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 were administered 400 mg/kg aqueous extract of P. ostreatus grown on 0.1 %, 0.2 %, 0.3 0/s, 0.4 % and 0.5 % HC1-soaked POB. The experiment lasted for a period of 21 days after which they were bled through ocular puncture and serum was separated from the blood sample and used for biochemical assays. Results of follicle stimulating hormone shows that the 0.2 % and 0.3 % HC1 treated bunch groups had a significant (p<O.05) decrease in FSH when compared with the control and other HCI-treated groups. 0.4 % and 0.5 % HC1-treated groups show a non-significant increase when compared with the control and 0.1 % group while that of luteinizing hormone shows that 0.1 %, 0.4 % and 0.5 % HCI-treated POB groups are non-significantly (p>O.05) higher than the control and 0.2 % groups but significantly (p<O.OS) higher than the 0.3 % group. also, the 0.2 % and 0.3 % show a non-significant (p>0.05) decrease when compared with the control group. This work shows that P. ostreatus grown on HC1-soaked POB have no effect on some male fertility hormones.
