The Antibiotic Sensitivity/Resistance Pattern Of Methicillin Sensitive Staphylococcus Aureus Isolated From Children Of Primary School Age From Umuariaga Community In Ikwuano L.G.A. Of Abia State.
ABSTRACT
The antibiotic sensitivity pattern of
Methicillin Sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) isolated from children of
primary school age from Umuariaga Community in Ikwuano L.G.A of Abia State,
were used for this research work. A total of 44 MSSA isolates were used for
this antibiotic sensitivity test which was carried out by the Kirby Bauer disc
diffusion method. Eight different antibiotics: Ceflazidime (CAZ), Cefuroxime
(CRX), Gentamicin (GEN), ceftriaxone (CTR), Erythromycin (ERY), Cloxacillin
(CXC), Ofloxacin (OFL) and Augmentin ((AUG) were used for this study. All MSSA
isolates were sensitive to Ofloxacin. The percentage sensitivity recorded in
the case of Ceftazidime, Cefuroxime, Gentamicin, Ceftriaxone and Erythromycin
were 75%, 6.8%, 86.4%, 79.5% and 59.1% respectively. All the isolates were
resistant to Augmentin and Cloxacillin. The study suggests the need for better
personal and environmental hygiene as well as judicious application of
antibiotics for the safety of the public.
