The Antibacterial Activity Of The Leaf And Bark Extracts Of Nauclea Latifolia (Pin Cushion Tree)
ABSTRACT
The antibacterial activity of the leaf and bark extracts of
Nauclea ialfoiia were evaluated on 4 bacteria pathogens (Kiebsiella
pneulnoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coil, Siaphylococous aureus.
Ethanol and water were used for the extraction. The disc diffusion method
reviewed that both the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the leaf and bark
produced zones of inhibition on Slap hyiococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
while E. coli and Kiebisella pneumoniae were resistant to both extracts. The
ethanolic extracts showed higher zones of inhibitions than the aqueous extract
with the bark extract being more effective than the leaf extract. The minimum
inhibitory concentration (MIC) value ranged from 12.5 — 50mg/mi for both Staphyiococcus
aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Phytochemical screening revealed the
presence of tannins, alkaloids, saponins, cyanide glycosides and phenols. The
activity of the ethanolic extracts of Nctuclea latfolia against the diseases
caused by the test organisms provides scientific justification for the use of
the herb in ethno medical practice in Nigeria.
