ABSTRACT

The antibacterial activity of Psidium guajava var iittorale.L. was evaluated on some enteric bacteria like Escherichia coil, Salmonella spp, Shigella spp, Kiebsiella spp and other human pathogen like Staphylococcus aiireus and Pseudomonas spp. The aqueous extract (cold water) showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Shigel/a spp and Salmonella spp. And they had 10mm, 5mm and 8mm as their zones of inhibition respectively, with 400mg/mi concentration. The Decoction extract had effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella spp, E. coli and Salmonella spp, with 10mm, 5mm, 9mm and 13mm as their diameter zones of inhibition with the 400mg/mi concentration. The ethanol extract was found to be effective against Staphylococcus spp, Shigella spp E. coil, and Salmonella spp, they showed 4mm, 6mm, 3mm and 2mm as their diameter zones of inhibition respectively with 400mg/mi concentration. While the chloroform/methanol extract was effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella spp, and Salmonella spp, with 6mm, 12mm, 10mm respectively, as their diameter zones of a inhibition. Pseudomonas spp and Kiebsielia spp were resistant to all the plant extract. The highest zone of inhibition was recorded with 400mg/mi concentration by the Saimonelia spp (13mm), using the Decotion extract. While the lowest zone of inhibition was with the 50mg/mi concentration of Simigella spp and S. aureus (1mm), using the ethanol and aqueous extracts respectively. The Decotion extract gave the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (M1C) of 12.5mg/mi with Salmonella spp, while the aqueous, ethanol and Chloroform/methanol extracts had an MIC of 50mg/mi with Staphylococcus aureus respectively. The phytochemical screening showed the presence of Tannin, saponin, flavonoid, phenols and steroids, The result obtained so far in this study showed that the extract of Psidium guajava Var iittoraie leaf have a high potential S for use in the treatment of diseases caused by these test organisms.
