ABSTRACT
This study accessed the prevalence and phenotypic
antibiotics bioassay on methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus in raw meat
sold at various retail outlets in Umuahia. From this study, twenty (20) fresh
meats were cultured and analyzed for the presence of Staphylococcus aureus. The
mean bacterial counts revealed that goat meat had the highest average bacterial
load of 2.43 10° (cfu/g) with a range of 1.67 x 10 (cfu/g) to 3.3 x 10° (cfu/g)
while chicken meat had the lowest bacterial load of 1.33 x 10°° (cfu/g). In the
prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus accessed in the raw meat samples, it was
revealed that there was high prevalence rate (90%) of Staphylococcus aureus
while the goat meat and beef had 100% presence of the organisms, pork meat and
chicken meat had 75% presence of the organisms recorded. About 46.67% of the
Staphylococcus aureus isolates were resistant to B-lactam antibiotics and as
such were Methicillin Resistant. ~ 1.67% of the Staphylococcus isolates of pork
meat were resistant to Methicillin while 33.33% of the isolates in Chicken and
Goat meat were Methicillin resistant. The antibiogram of Staphylococcus aureus
isolates from meat samples revealed that Staphylococcus aureus isolated from
goat meat exhibited higher percentage of resistance to Lomefloxacin at 11.50%,
followed by 10.67% resistance exhibited by the Staphylococcus aureus isolated
from goat meat to Cabenicilin antibiotics. Staphylococcus aureus isolated from
beef sample showed the least resistant to Ofloxacin at 7.33%. The high
prevalence rate (100%) of MRSA recorded in this study emphasizes the need to
encourage basic hygiene, good husbandry and biosecurity measures on farms,
abattoirs and food processing units which has tendencies to reduce the spread
of MRSA in animal population.
