Teachers’ Use Of School Library Resources For Teaching In Selected Secondary Schools In Umuah1a Metropolis, Abia State, Nigeria:- Iroaja Grace A
ABSTRACT
The
purpose ofthe study was to ascertain teachers’ use ofschool library resources
for teaching in secondary schools in Umuahia metropolis, Abia State, Nigeria.
The research design used for this study is the descriptive survey. A sample
size of 155 teachers were total sampled from Ibeku High School (110) and
Government College Umuahia (45). A research structured questionnaire was and
139 (89.5%) were returned. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive
statistics of mean scores with the use of Statistical package for Social
Sciences (SPSS). The study found the existence oflibraries in the selected
secondary schools and also availability ofinformation resources, mainly
non-digital resources. Extent of use of the school library resources for teaching
by the teachers was moderate at a grand mean of2.52. However, there was
constraints to the effective and efficient usage the library resources for
teaching which includes irrelevant resources to the teaching curriculum, poor
light, erratic power supply and others. Strategies such as the acquisition
ofbooks and weeding out outdated ones regularly, acquisition ofrelevant
resources relevant to the teaching curriculum, improved funding, hiring of
qualified libraries, organizing workshop and seminars for the teachers and
improving the library condition were all strategies found to be important
towards enhancing teachers' use of library resources. Furthermore, to enhance
teachers’ use of library resources in the secondary schools, the above
mentioned strategies should be adopted.
