ABSTRACT
This
investigation was carried out to detennine the Effective Dose (ED) and effect
of X-ray doses on percentage gennination, growth and yield components of
seedlings derived from okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L). Moench) varieties
(Yakasa and Clemson spineless).Seeds of the two okra varieties were treated
with (1, 2,4, 6, 8 MGy) at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Xray Unit.The
treated seeds were sown in nylon bags in a green house for two weeks. Data
collected was subjected to simple linear regression analysis to establish the
effective dose. Two dose were chosen from each of the varieties for the field
experiment. The experiment was designed in a 2X3 in Randomized Complete Block
Design (RCBD) with three replicates. Germination percentage was collected and
subjected to statistical analysis. The result obtained on gennination
percentage was not significantly different on the two okra varieties under
study. The effect of the different X-ray doses on the growth parameters and
yields differed. The lower radiation dose (2 MGy) was more effective in Clemson
spineless whereas the highest dose (6 MGy) had more significant impact in
Yakasa than the lowest (4 MGy). In general, irradiating seeds of Yakasa with
X-ray dose of 6 MGy before sowing is therefore recommended this also applies to
Clemson spineless at a dose of2 MGy.
