Studies On The Antimycotic Effect Of Some Antifungal Drugs On Candida Isolates From Pregnant Women In Antenatal Clinic Of Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria
ABSTRACT
The potency of three antifungal drugs was examined at
different. concentrations using the disc diffusion method. The concentrations
of the drugs ranged from 20-100%. Highest sensitivity rate for each antifungal
drug ws recorded at 100% while the Iowe.t sensitivity rate observed occurret at
20%. The mean zone of inhibition of each antifungal drug was examined and the
following values were obtained for each drug, Mycost;tine.(24mm), Ketoconazole
(15.5mm) and Griseofulvin (20.0mm) were re.orded at 100%. The mean zone of
rthibition of each antifungal drug sioWed the following values at 20%.
Mycostatine (9.0mm), Ketocoiazole (1.0mm) and Griseofulvin (3.5mm). •
Mycostatine (a polyene) had a high inhibition against Cavidida albicans due to
its fungickal efficacy and it is therefore useful fr oral tberapeutic treatment
of the iifection. Although, Griseofulvin had a fungicidal effect, it was not as
high as Mycostatine. Ketoconazole, showed a very low irrhibition rate (1.0mm).
Inhibition of C'andida albicans by the various antfungal drugs was fcnnd to
increase as the concentration of the antifungal drugs increased
