Studies On Biological Value And True Digestibility Of Cocoa Based Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Food.
ABSTRACT
Studies on biological value and true digestibility of cocoa based ready-to-use therapeutic food were carried out using 16 weanling albino rats. The test diets were formulated with; cocoa powder, malted corn and bambaranut at the ratios of 60:20:20 and 67.207:20:12.793, sugar, butter, vanilla and vitamin mineral mix were also added . Protein casein and nitrogen free diet were used as positive and negative control respectively. The rats were housed and fed (4 rats per group). Data generated were used in calculating biological value and true digestibility during the 7-day feeding period. The group fed with diet from 67.207:20:12.793 cocoa based ready-to-use therapeutic food has significant higher weight gain (P<0.05). The biological value of the test diets were high (68% and 74%) and had no significant difference (P>0.05). The value of true digestibility of the 67.207:20: 12.793 (91%) cocoa based ready-to-use therapeutic food was significantly higher (P<0.05) than the group fed 60:20:20 cocoa based ready-to-use therapeutic food (89%). The cocoa based ready-to-use therapeutic food exhibited favourable protein indices (biological value and true digestibility) with reference to the casein.
