ABSTRACT

This study investigated the perception of sex education among secondary school students and its implications for counseling. A sample of 240 students in the senior secondary school level drawn from 6 secondary schools in the urban and rural areas of Umuahia Local Government Area, were interviewed with structured questionnaire. The result of the survey revealed that more than 60% of the students were between the ages of 12 and 15 years, while distribution of school emolument by gender was 55% female and 45% male. It was also shown that about 34% of the students have had sex mostly between the ages of 10 and 15 years. Awareness and perception of sex education among the students was found to be poor. It was established that major factors which influence this poor level of awareness and perception were religious teac (43%), poor relationships between parents and students (23%), and rejection of such trends by most cultures (20%). Major recommendation include that relevant authorities should initiate awareness campaign for sex education; religious leaders should reach a compromise and incorporate sex education into their moral teaching; while parents should spend more quality time with their children, under which environment they can share with them.
