ABSTRACT

The study aimed at investigating strategies for reviving textile industries in south-eastern Nigeria. The main objectives of the study are to identify the strategies for reviving textile industries in south eastern Nigeria. Specifically, the study ascertains: The present situation of textile industries in south east Nigeria, identified the challenges of textile industries in south eastern and identified the measure for handling those challenges in textile industry in south east ern Nigeria. The population consists of the following categories: Employees and Owner of the textile industries. The population estimate is segmented to reflect standard grouping in working staff in the following order with population size of each being 210 GCM LTD Textile mills, Onitsha, Working staff, 30 Ebonyi state textile mill, showing an overall population of 240 (two hundred and forty). Workers were randomly selected from the employees register among the rank and file of the labour force in the selected industries. A survey research design was adopted for the study. A total of 240 staff were sampled and stratified along ten local government areas in the two State, Onitsha and Ebonyi. Structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Three experts validated the instrument. Five research questions guided the study and three hypotheses were tested at 0. 05 level of significance. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while chi-square statistics were used to test the hypotheses. It was found that affective attitudes of staff and consumers towards textile industries were low, there was 98 per cent acceptance of the strategies that would enhance I revive manufacturing fabrics industries and promote textile industries in the area. The findings; also showed that Textile Industries in Nigeria still operate with obsolete technology and machinery that result in low productivity, The current recession in the country including South-Eastern Nigeria made the textile industries unable to produce the quantity required, The textile industries in South Eastern Nigeria experience shortage of funds for smooth running of mill, High demand of foreign material is due to poor quality produce in South-Eastern textile industries. It was recommended that consumer's acceptability of fabrics should be the overriding factor in the production of any fabric, thus every efforts should be geared towards making the consumers to accept the products of the textile industries in Nigeria in general and south eastern Nigeria in particular.
