ABSTRACT
The study examined School Communication of
Administrators and Teachers Job Performance in Unity Schools' in South-South,
Nigeria. The study adopted a correlational research design. The sample size for
this study was 5 IO respondents which comprised 50 teachers from the IO
selected unity secondary schools and IO principals from each of the IO selected
unity secondary schools drawn from a population of 1,644 respondents which
comprises all the 17 principals and 1,627 teachers of all the seventeen ( 17)
unity schools of 2020/2021 academic session in South-South zone, Nigeria .. The
sample size was determined using Taro Yamane's mathematical formula sample
estimation. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select a sample
fraction of 0.5. Two instruments titled School Communication of Administrators
Questionnaire (SCAQ) and 'Teacher Job Performance Questionnaire (TJPQ) were
used for data collection. The two instruments were validated by three experts,
two from the Department of Educational Management and one from Department of
Science Education, all from College of Education, Michael Okpara University of
Agriculture, Umudike. In order to determine the reliability of the instruments,
30 copies of the questionnaires were administered to 30 teachers and principals
from Federal Government College Okigwe which is not part of the study area. The
internal consistency of each of the instruments were obtained using Cronbach
alpha statistic which yielded an index of .79 and .81 for SCAQ and TJPQ
respectively, Four adequately trained research assistants helped in the
administration and collection of the instruments from the respondents. Data
collected were analyzed using Pearson Moment Correlation Coefficient in
answering the eight research questions while Linear Regression analysis was
used to test the eight null hypotheses that guided the study at 0.05 level of
significance. The findings of the study amongst others revealed there is a high
and significant relationship among communication of school administrators; (verbal,
listening, non-verbal, written, electronic, feedback. and grapevine) and
teachers' job performance in unity secondary schools. It also revealed that
there is a high positive and significant relationship between grapevine
communication of school administrators and teachers job performance in unity
secondary schools in South South Nigeria. The study therefore recommended among
others that school administrators should be abreast with varieties of
communication typology and should equally be flexible in adopting variety of
communications types to meet the needs and expectation of staff.
